Around eleven that morning, Francesca poured a glass of tea, then went upstairs and pushed open the French doors and walked out on the balcony. Being a Saturday, the Quarter was packed with ambling tourist. She had planned to go exercise at the zoo, but Ryan’s invitation was more enticing. She leaned back in the chair and closed her eyes.

Alicia had slept since Ryan left. Francesca wished she had a way of talking some sense into her. She’d wanted to talk to her and convince her to wear Daddy Bo’s necklace.

The beat of a rock song from Bourbon Street brought images to mind of her sister on stage. She forced it away and thought of Tessa and Abbey instead. Then she recalled the sickening sweet nausea from the intense dread she’d felt at the zoo. Whoever had been following her, must’ve been watching her interaction with Wayne and his daughters.

After applying a light coat of makeup and changing clothes, Francesca had thirty minutes before Ryan returned. In the parlor, she placed the pink phone on the bookcase and set the crystal ball in the middle of the table. Strange but she missed her clients. She certainly missed their money.

Then she decided to do something she’d never done—read her own cards. She shuffled, then placed the cards in the usual arrangement. She studied them trying to match their meaning to her life. The Princess of Wand she assumed was herself, and the Knight was Ryan.

The nine of Swords lay between her card and the one she connected with Alicia. The same card had been present when she’d read Candice Gore’s cards. She couldn’t decide if the card was intended for her or Alicia. Perhaps if she could read Alicia’s cards, she’d have more insight to what dangers lay ahead. She doubted Alicia would cooperate but maybe.

She carefully put the deck together, went upstairs, and tapped on Alicia’s bedroom door.

“Go away. I’m sleeping.”

“It’s important. Open up.”

“No.”

“I’m not going to stop banging on your door until you open it.”

“Shit, Francesca.”

When she heard Alicia stomping across the floor, she smiled. The door opened and a wild haired sleepy Alicia stood before her. Francesca pushed past her. “Shuffle these cards.”

“Why?”

“Just do it.”

“No. It’s stupid.”

“This is important. I did my cards downstairs. I want to see if some of the same cards come up with you.”

“This is ridiculous. I’m not falling for any hocus pocus bullshit you give me. It won’t convince me to leave Tory.”

“I’m more interested in myself,” Francesca lied. “Secretly believing the dark cards had been intended for Alicia.”

“Give them here.” Alicia begrudgingly accepted the cards and shuffled the deck before dividing them into three stacks.

Francesca arranged the cards on her sister’s desk and studied them. Again the nine and five of Swords showed up. When she stared at the dark cards surrounding Alicia, a cramp settled in the back of her neck.

The other cards were just as unsettling.

Something bad could be in store for her sister, and she had little power to do anything about it.
